Many of us know the signs of an allergy attack – runny nose, scratchy throat, itchy watery eyes. After playing or working outside, be sure to wash your hands thoroughly, and before touching your eyes. Typical allergy symptoms can be a real problem if you rely on contact lenses.
Here are a few tips on how to care for your eyes from the American Refractive Surgery Council when the pollen count soars:
Be diligent about your contact lens hygiene. Sterilize – sterilize – clean – clean – clean. As we mentioned, washing your hands before touching your eyes is a must. It is also important to remove contacts before sleeping. Rubbing your eyes with contacts in is a recipe for scratched corneas and infections.
Replace your contacts more often…or replace them, period. If you are using extended wear lenses, consider switching to a daily disposable for the time being. Many find contacts simply un-wearable during allergic reactions, sending even the very vain back into glasses for at least a few months out of the year. Or, maybe, this is the year you look into LASIK to avoid having to deal with contacts at all?
Embrace artificial tears. Lay in a supply – preservative-free formulas are often recommended for allergy sufferers – and use them frequently. A little known fact is that most severe eye allergy symptoms are often due to dry eye, which contacts can make even worse. So keep the drops handy and use them as directed.
Close your eyes and chill out. Many people find relief using simple cold compresses. Wring out a washcloth, put it in a plastic bag and place it the refrigerator or freezer in the a.m. and it will be ready and waiting for you when you get home from work, school or errands. 10 – 15 minutes. Repeat as needed. Okay, maybe have two chilled washcloths on hand in the fridge – that way there is always one ready and waiting when you need it.
Don’t be shy about asking for help. Your eye doctor has medications that can make a big difference.
There are alternatives. Living with allergies means there are two to four months of the year that your contacts are either bothersome or unbearable. Most contacts wearers like the convenience of contact lenses. However, if contacts are NOT making your life easier during allergy season, it might be time consider asking your doctor if LASIK would be a good alternative for your vision.
Not everyone is a good candidate for vision correction procedures, but if you are interested in learning more, then finding a highly qualified surgeon to conduct a thorough evaluation of your vision and health is an important step.
We wish you luck managing your eye healthy during the itchy eye season, but we hope our adorable zoo animal party favors help you, and your guests, keep those hands clean and allergens out of your eyes!
