10 Reasons Why Cats are the Perfect Pet for Busy Adults

Imonni has been asking Justin and me for months if she could have a cat! I would love to get an indoor kitten, however, we have two dogs that have been us for years. So that idea is completely off the table. However, for those of you who are thinking of getting a cat here’s 10 Reasons Why Cats are the Perfect Pet for Busy Adults

Owning a pet is a wonderful way to improve your overall health. Studies show that animals can help boost people’s moods, fight allergies, and can provide a companion for lonely or adults who live alone. While many people may think they are dog people, they don’t often consider the long-term needs of dogs as compared to cats in their decision-making process. Busy adults especially need animals who are lower maintenance and can still provide them with all the benefits that come with having a furry friend in the home. Here are some of the reasons why cats are the purr-fect pets for those busy adults.

Can be Left Alone for Longer Stretches Than Dogs

Let’s face it, when you work all day, you don’t want to worry if your dog has peed all over the house or made a huge mess because you were gone too long. They might do fine for 8-9 hours, but what happens if you don’t come home for 12 hours or more that day? Dogs are pack animals and when they are left alone too long, they can be destructive. This is the primary reason why busy adults should consider a cat instead of a dog. You can easily leave a cat alone for a couple of days as long as they have food, water, and clean cat litter.

Help Manage Pests Like Mice

Does your home have a problem with mice? While using traps and other pest control methods can be useful, owning a cat is even better. They provide natural pest control against mice.

Cost Less to Care For

Cats are much smaller than most dogs which means you’ll spend a lot less on food over their lifetime. Additionally, because they are indoors more often, they are less prone to injuries that can require complex veterinary care. All they need most are regular checkups and just the basic shots for a house cat.

They are Quiet

Coming home to a cat means you may not even know they are there. While some cats may greet you at the door, others are lazily napping when you walk in the door. If you like a peaceful home, getting a cat is the way to go.

Fun to Play With

While they are quiet, cats can also be quite playful and frisky. Using a variety of cats toys, string, and even a laser pointer can make playtime more enjoyable.

They Keep Themselves Clean

Cats are very clean animals. In fact, they do an excellent job of cleaning their fur all on their own. Even though they walk through cat litter throughout the day, they spend time cleaning their paws and their fur to ensure they are not dirty.

Can be Kept in Apartments

Have you ever applied for an apartment or other rental unit? There are often weight and breed restrictions that make it difficult for some dog owners to find the right place. Cats on the other hand are often allowed in places that dogs are not. Cats are less risky for apartments as well.

Less Needy Than Other Kinds of Pets

Have you ever owned a cat and a dog? Which one requires you to walk them 2-3 times a day? Which one needs to go outside to relieve themselves? Which one wakes you up when the sun comes up because their bladder is too full? Which one is more likely to jump all over you and demand your attention when you walk in the door? The truth is that while cats enjoy your attention and affection, they don’t demand or require it the same way that dogs do.

Cats Can Lower Your Blood Pressure

Want to improve your blood pressure? Get a cat. Studies show that owning a pet, especially a cat, can reduce blood pressure. This effect is so profound that hospitals are incorporating pet therapy for individuals who have had cardiac events.

Easier to Get a Pet Sitter For

Dogs can be scary to some people, especially if they are large. Finding a pet sitter for your dog can be far more challenging because they require more care. They need to be walked, taken out regularly to go to the bathroom, and so much more. With a cat, you can easily get someone to simply check in on your cat every other day to refill food and water and clean out the litter box.

All of these reasons make cats the perfect pet for busy adults who want a companion while they are home, but without the same level of fuss that dogs need and deserve.
