Traveling internationally with young children can feel like your stepping into a world of possibilities and a small dose of chaos. Every trip promises new sights, sounds, and adventures, but it also requires a few clever strategies to keep your little ones happy and everyone’s stress levels low.

Families who prepare well do not just survive the journey; they enjoy it. Use our tips for traveling internationally with young kids so you can travel confidently and create lasting memories.

Get to the Airport Early

You should always arrive at the airport at least two to three hours before an international flight. The extra time allows for check-in, security screening, bathroom breaks, and unexpected changes. This also gives you a buffer for long lines, stroller gate checks, and security procedures.

Prepare for Delays

Delays are inevitable and can leave any traveler feeling antsy, especially an excited child. Bring small comforts for your little one, such as:

  • Extra snacks
  • Reusable water bottles (empty for TSA)
  • A change of clothes
  • Their favorite stuffed animal

All these items help keep your child comfortable if you’re stuck waiting for a few hours. You should also be ready with different ways to keep your kids entertained during the delay. For example, you could bring a tablet or their favorite activity book to keep them busy while you wait, or walk around the airport to play I Spy as you explore together.

Prevent Jet Lag

Start adjusting your child’s sleep schedule a few days before departure by moving bedtime and wake-up times closer to your destination’s time zone. Keep routines consistent with familiar bedtime rituals, even on the plane. This helps children adjust to the new time zone, allowing everyone to enjoy the first days of the trip.

Keep Documents Together

Another tip for traveling internationally with young kids is to use a single folder or travel pouch for passports, visas, boarding passes, and medical forms. If you travel with other adults, one of you should always remain in charge of the folder and have easy access to it. You should also make digital copies of important documents and store them securely on a phone or cloud service.

Travel Tip

Consider keeping all important documents in a personal bag (purse or computer bag) so you have easy access to them and can save valuable time during security checks.

Have Fun

Focus on enjoying each moment, whether you’re at the airport or exploring a new city. Traveling is one of the best ways to build strong family bonds, as it allows you to spend quality time together. Watch for the little moments—your child’s laughter over a new game or their wonder at seeing something for the first time—because these create memories you will all treasure.

Encourage curiosity by asking questions about what children see and hear. Even small moments, like exploring an airport or enjoying a new snack, can create lasting family memories. When parents prioritize fun, children remain engaged, and the journey becomes part of the adventure rather than just a means to reach the destination.
