When Joy was born, she had to stay in the New Born ICU for 5 days and those 5 days felt like the longest days of my life! When she was finally cleared to come home, like any overly paranoid mommie , I had to have everything sterilize. For a matter of fact, I kinda of went over board with how clean I wanted every area she occupied. I didn’t even let her have tummy time on our wood floors, without using a freshly cleaned blanket. At the time, it was easy to kept her surrounding clean. Mat thought I was bonkers, which made me even more determined to keep her area clean! However, once she learned how to walk, I had to let her be free to roam. That meant, me being OK with her walking on our bare wood floors and getting into everything.

ERRR that was a very scary time for me but I quickly learned to adjust by taking these 5 Simply Was to Detox your Child’s Play Area.

~Switch to Non-Toxic Products ~

Joy has tons of toys however, each morning I pick 5 to 10 items for her to play with. Which makes it easier for me to wash them using a non-toxic cleaning products, preferably ones made with natural ingredients. In addition, we wash down her high chair, play tables, door frames and floors 2 to 33 times per week.

~ Stop using Mothballs ~

Ok, you’re probably thinking, MOTHBALL! What is the world does mothballs have to do with my child’s area. However, if your home is a lot like mine, one of your child’s play area’s could be in your bedroom or even theirs. So to eliminate moths from eating my beautiful clothes, I use cedar hanger, chips or sachets with mint, thyme or cloves. Plus ceder, mint and thyme smell much better and I’m removing the chemicals moth ball contain from my home.

~ No Shoes in the House ~

When I visit my Sister-in-laws house, one big rule she has is no shoes in the house. Being that she has white carpets, I figured she just wanted to keep it nice. However, I started to think about all the nasty germs, bacteria and pesticides, that can be tracked in by shoes and it freak me out. So to avoid bring unwanted germs into my home we no longer ware shoes. Right when I walk through the front door, I kick my shoes off and go bear foot, but the Mat and the kids prefer socks or slippers.

~ Let in the Fresh Air ~

I live in an old adobe brick home and about 6 years ago, I upgraded the window. This cut down the draft and my heating bill, however, it trapped in toxins, germs, and other contaminants that mange to get passed the door. Therefore, no matter what time of the year it is, I will open all the windows to let some fresh air flow through. I try to do this once a day, but sometimes in the winter, it’s more like once a week.

~ Use a professional Carpet Cleaner ~

Personally, I do not have carpet in my home, we removed it because it’s the biggest filter in your home, it keeps in almost anything that comes in the door. When we did have carpet, we would have it cleaned every 3 months by a professional cleaner. However, traditional carpet cleaning leaves soapy, chemical residues that can exacerbate allergy, asthma, and chemical sensitivities. Last month, I became an Ambassador for Zerorez of Southern California. One of the perks was, I was able to get my kitchen floors cleaned and they did an amazing job using a non-toxic cleaning process. Many of my blogger buddies had their carpets done, as well and they where happy. For those of you that prefer carpet, it important to have them cleaned professional every quarter.

Zerorez, uses their a special patented EMPOWERED WATER™, that they process through electrolysis to create a patented alkaline solution that contains millions of hydroxide cleaning spheres that thoroughly cleans and eliminates dirt, bacteria, toxins, left-over soaps or detergents from previous cleanings. For a matter of fact the alkaline water ZerorezSoCal uses is so safe and pure you can drink it, I did:).
