Why Maintaining Your HVAC System Is Essential

Benjamin Franklin observed, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” While Ben’s wisdom is often applied to health care, it holds just as true for maintaining your HVAC system. A proactive approach to HVAC upkeep not only improves comfort, it can help save money, time, and the environment.

1) Save Money

Your HVAC system consists of various elements that work to keep your home comfortable. If any component requires maintenance or repair, the entire system is affected.

For example, if the air intake of your heating system is obstructed, you must burn more fuel to heat your home. If the return air duct is obstructed, the amount of air going to the heat exchanger will be insufficient. The furnace must work harder to warm enough air to make your home feel comfortable. Have a pro check the ductwork and the furnace to reveal ways to enhance the system’s efficiency.

Similarly, a relatively simple analysis of your thermostat settings can reveal considerable cost-saving opportunities. This element of HVAC maintenance is often ignored, but it’s a great way to save money. Make a chart of when each member of the household is home. Also, write down the most comfortable temperatures for various times of year. This data can be analyzed and used to reprogram your thermostats. Dynamic thermostat settings can give your HVAC system–and your bank account–a break.

Improve Your Home’s Comfort

While the thermostat settings can improve the feel of your home, the comfort of your house is dependent on more than just temperature. Air quality plays an equally vital role. Maintaining your HVAC system’s filters means cleaner air is brought into and pumped out of the HVAC components. Filter maintenance can limit the amount of dust and allergens recirculated through the house.

Help the Environment

The fossil fuels used to power HVAC systems release elements harmful to the environment into the atmosphere. The more efficient your heating and cooling system, the fewer fossil fuels you consume. Your system will devour less energy if you maintain the filers and keep the inner surfaces of heating and cooling components running smoothly. Checking pilot lights, exhaust and supply pipes, and interior ductwork can also lead to energy savings—all of which ease the burden on the environment.

Make Your Home Safer

The exhaust mechanisms and air-circulation components of your heating and cooling systems can work for your family’s health or against it. An HVAC system that isn’t properly maintained can route harmful gasses, as well as contaminated air, back into the home. This can be avoided with preventative maintenance performed by pros like those at Custom Mechanical. It doesn’t have to take much time or money to make your home safer.

Resorting to a “pound of cure” isn’t just inconvenient; it’s expensive. On the other hand, instituting a maintenance routine for your HVAC system can be a panacea for your comfort, safety, the environment, and your wallet.
