Ways To Encourage Your Kids To Play Outside

With the lure of video games, tablets, and endless TV shows, it’s easy for children to spend their free time indoors. While the latest technology can be entertaining and educational, kids must still spend time exploring outside. Time spent outside allows children to discover new environments, learn about nature, and cultivate a love for the outdoors. Try out some of these effective ways to encourage your kids to play outside.

Buy the Backyard Essentials

To make your backyard an attractive place for your children, consider investing in some essentials that will create an exciting environment. A playset with swings, a slide, and monkey bars could inspire hours of outdoor play.

Likewise, sporting equipment, such as a basketball hoop or soccer net, can motivate kids to play outside. Consider the types of sports your children enjoy playing or invest in a variety of athletic gear so your kids can experiment with various sports.

Pro Tip

Aside from being fun, there are many reasons backyard sporting courts are popular. They are low-maintenance and long-lasting, making them a cost-effective outdoor play option.

Think of Fun Activities

Sometimes, children have difficulty deciding what to do, especially at a young age. Having too many options can leave them feeling overwhelmed and may lead them to simply choose to stay indoors.

To help with the decision-making, plan some fun outdoor activities for your kids. Setting up a scavenger hunt with a list of things to look for, such as flowers, rocks, and bugs, can keep your kids entertained for hours. Additionally, this creates an opportunity for you to teach your children about our beautiful world.

Pro Tip

Give your child a say in what they do by providing a few options for activities. This gives kids the freedom to choose without feeling overwhelmed.

Go on Adventures

Sometimes, the backyard might not be enough. If your child loves the thrill of an adventure, you could go on nature hikes in nearby nature reserves or enjoy a long walk around your neighborhood. Whatever you choose, try to tailor your adventure so it is age-appropriate for your child.

If your child is interested in a specific activity, such as fishing or camping, plan a day trip or weekend getaway to enjoy the activity together. These outings provide quality bonding time and can also introduce your child to new hobbies and interests.

Pro Tip

Going on family day trips or weekend adventures gives you an opportunity to create lifelong memories.

Don’t Force It

a

One of the best ways to encourage your kids to play outside is to ensure it always feels like an exciting treat, not a requirement. If your children resist going outside at times, allow that space. Forcing them to go out can create negative associations with outdoor play. Instead, gently encourage them by highlighting the fun activities they can do or inviting their friends over for outside playdates.

By making outdoor play an enjoyable and voluntary part of their routine, children are more likely to embrace it. Over time, this will lead to a greater appreciation for the outdoors and all its beauty.
