Top Homeless Shelter Needs During Summer

Any season is a good season to donate resources. Many homeless outreach programs receive contributions for cold-weather essentials, but summer is important too. Look at the top homeless shelter needs during summer for donation ideas.

Umbrellas

Umbrellas are handy for all types of weather. Of course, they protect people from rain, but they also offer shade. Unhoused people spend a lot of time outdoors. Excessive sun is uncomfortable and can lead to sunburns. Additionally, humid weather can lead to heavy downpours. Donate umbrellas to shelters and consider other rain gear too. For instance, ponchos and rain boots are helpful!

Reusable Water Bottles

Reusable water bottles are among the top homeless shelter needs during summer because they support hydration. Individuals can carry water with them at all times. Reusable bottles are more sustainable and durable than plastic ones. When recipients encounter water fountains, they can fill their bottles without hassle.

Care Packages

It’s no secret that grueling heat brings sweaty days. Although most people can take showers and sit inside, people without homes don’t have that option. Fortunately, you can help houseless people beat the heat this summer by distributing care packages to shelters.

Summer survival items include hats, sunscreen, insect repellent, sunglasses, sanitizing wipes, and personal hygiene products. You can also add handheld fans to the packages to make heat more tolerable.

Nonperishable Snacks

Dealing with food insecurity is a reality for people experiencing homelessness. They often don’t know where their next meal will come from. Support someone in need by donating nonperishable snacks to homeless shelters. Trail mix, granola bars, beef jerky, and fruit snacks don’t require refrigeration. But avoid products with chocolate because they’ll melt in the sun.

Light Summer Clothing

Not only is donating clothing a quick tip to help you make it a green year, but it helps someone in need. Unhoused people don’t have a lot of clothing, limiting their wardrobe to apparel that fits only one season. For example, some individuals may only have winter clothing. But what about the other seasons?

Summer is hot, and light clothing is necessary for the weather. If you can, donate T-shirts, shorts, capris, and other breathable attire. Your contribution can make someone’s summer bearable!

Reusable Tote Bags

You probably use tote bags to carry groceries or transport goods. They’re beneficial to daily living, so you should donate them to shelters. They make it easier for unhoused people to carry their belongings like care packages, water bottles, and umbrellas. Reusable tote bags are also lightweight and collapsible, making them perfect for individuals constantly on the move.
