I know a large sum of us appreciate movies that are based on a true story because they’re inspiring and deliver when it comes to storytelling. What’s great about The Finest Hours is its acknowledgment about an event that took place that many people aren’t aware of. I like that this true story wasn’t corrupted with an overwhelming amount of ‘Hollywood magic’ and seemed to stay authentic to what happened during the rescue.
The Finest Hours gave me new insight about how hard working and humble people were back then. We see the protagonist of the film do what’s right instead of succumbing to the signs of failure, and I think that alone is very admirable. It was intriguing to me that the crew members prayed to God when they thought their times had come. Its tone reminded me that nothing is possible without God, which is a strong message for young Christians.
The film takes place during the 1950s on the shores of Boston during what Bostonians would call a ‘wicked’ snow storm. With technology advancing it becomes easier and easier to spot terrible CGI, however, this is not the case with The Finest Hours. I felt as if I was there with the rescue crew during the blizzard. The scenery was so captivating that I left the theater with scurvy, and even though I got to see mother nature doing it’s worst, it still had a beautiful side to it. Seriously you guys, bring your life jackets when you take your family to see this.
This article wouldn’t be complete without mentioning the outstanding job at casting and acting. Everything from their accents to their mannerisms led me to believe they were born and raised in Boston if the fact that The Finest Hours is based on a true story isn’t enough for you to go see it because of the phenomenal acting.
A movie like this is best enjoyed with friends or significant others. If you’re a History nerd like myself, then I’m sure you’ll love the film as much as I did. If you decide to bring young ones they might lose interest so I recommend making this a date night flick. Overall, it’s a very inspiring film that reminded me of the morals and values we all should have as humans and told me that nothing is impossible, and after you’re done experiencing the true story, you’ll know that nothing is impossible as well.
Until Next Time!
