Should Gaming Be An Expensive Hobby?

Gaming can be a pretty expensive hobby to invest in. There’s a lot of gear you can buy to set up your desk or sofa in the way you like best, and the more time you spend playing, the sooner that gear is going to burn out.

But when it comes to enjoying your hobby and also keeping the cost down, is it possible to make gaming cheap and cheerful? Of course it is! Gaming is never going to be the most affordable hobby to spend time on, but it can be much less of a drain on your bank account.

And while there are many ways to save money as a gamer, these three principles should guide every decision you make about getting the most out of gaming.

Remember, Sales are Common

Buying games on sale is common sense, but gaming sales are ten times more common than you’d think. Any time a game comes onto the market, the next sale is only going to be a week or two away.

On platforms like Steam, a lot of new games come with a limited time 10-20% discount from day one! But even if you miss this, you won’t have to wait long before the price starts to drop naturally or the next big sale will offer at least 20-30% off.

Set Your Own Limits

Applying a bit of discipline to your gaming budget is crucial. Set your own limits, no matter if you’re buying a new game, looking to upgrade your graphics card, or you’ve loaded up some slot games and fancy winning big. In the case of the latter, the casino site will set and monitor this limit for you; just head to your account settings to set this up.

But on other platforms, set yourself an upper limit that you’re not willing to go past – that’s a concrete line you cannot cross. But beneath this, have a limit you’d rather not go past but would be OK if you did. That gives you a bit of freedom in spending on gaming without going too far.

Play Through a Gaming Back Catalogue

You don’t need the latest release every single time it comes out. You don’t need to pay a premium for the latest game that everyone else is talking about. Don’t let gaming FOMO get to you! Only play a new game if you’re genuinely interested in it.

Instead, send yourself through a gaming back catalogue that’s filled to the brim with brilliant releases from years ago. These will be cheaper and you’re likely to get three times the amount of games for the same price.

We don’t think gaming should ever be an expensive hobby! You can keep the price down by running your hobby through these three principles every time you go to make a purchase. It doesn’t matter what you’re spending on – see if there’s a sale, set a limit, and check if there’s a cheaper yet better game out there.
