With winter break approaching fast, parents everywhere are entering panic mode. After all, having the kids home is hard enough in the summer, let alone when snow, frost, and incessant rain leave you all trapped inside. It may only be for a couple of weeks but, as any parent who’s spent even a few days inside with kids can attest, it’ll feel neverending once cabin fever sets in.
Unfortunately, when the weather isn’t good, it can feel like you have no choice but to stay in. Lucky for you, that needn’t be the case. If you all want to stay sane this winter break, then it’s worth getting out whatever the weather. Keep on reading to find out how.
Don’t overlook outdoor play altogether
There will likely be some days when playing outside isn’t an option, but that doesn’t mean your kids need to stay in all break long. Unless there’s an active blizzard outside, it’s icy, or it’s hammering down with rain, there’s probably some opportunity for outdoor play. Admittedly, you will want to keep this brief in cold conditions, and may also want to stock up on essentials like rain boots, umbrellas, thick coats, or even youth insulated bib overalls. But, once you’ve got the right equipment, try to get everyone out for at least a short walk or outdoor stint each day. That way, everyone will feel fresher, and the kids can finally burn off some energy.
Find local activities
Getting out doesn’t have to mean getting outside. Most areas have some great activities over the winter break, and a lot of them are free for the festive season. From Christmas grottos to crafting activities and even winter boot camps, all of these things can be great for filling a day or afternoon, and stimulating the kids so that you don’t have to. And, let’s be honest, winter events like these can also be great for getting everyone in the festive mood, meaning that you should all return home feeling cozy, comforted, and a lot more tolerant of one another.
Never underestimate the power of a playdate
Play dates may seem like an uninspiring winter activity, but this is, after all, the season for coming together. As is always the case when your kids are off school, getting the opportunity to play with someone else their age can also be great fun for your kids while ensuring that you get a much-needed break. While it doesn’t technically count as getting out, even getting out of your winter routine by having friends around can see your kids rejuvenated and playing with their toys in totally different ways. On the other hand, going out to visit friends for even brief periods can break up the day, see your kids playing with different things for once, and allow you to relax in someone else’s messy kitchen for the first time all break long!
Believe us when we say that getting out sometimes will save your winter break, even if it does mean braving the chill!
