I love the beach. In the picture above, on the other side of the fence, the waves are calm, the parking isn’t crowed and the weather is beautiful. However, I have no clue how to gain access to the parking lot and to get over the fence seems way to dangerous. After all, I am pretty sure I can climb over the first fence and it seem like there is enough room for me to squeeze myself under the wires. But, what if there’s a big drop that I can’t see. What’s more, if I have PATIENCE and keep going straight. I might just find the access road to the parking lot right around the corner. So, I can drive in, park and enjoy my day with the family.
My little day dream reminds me of how life’s been lately. I can clearly see all my goals on the other side of the fence but some days the road to get there seems so far away. I can admit, I don’t have a lot of patience and it’s easy to be distracted by my peers. However, I decided to focus on what a great women by the name of Cindy Hall told me early in my career.
Run Your Own Race!
It’s was my first year working for the company and my goal was to end the year in the Presidents Club. One night, I was on the sales floor looking at the leader board and discovered I was at the bottom! As I began to analyze my peers sales numbers, my dreams of being in the Presidents Club seems likes they were slipping away. So with a heavy heart, I went to my desk to pack up for the night.
Cindy desk was right across from mine and she notice I was upset. So in a Joyful voice she said “Kathy! Do you know why race horses wear those big black blinders on their heads?” I was completely puzzled and replied ” No”. She replied “So they can’t see whats on either sides of them. This forces them to look straight ahead and focus on running their OWN RACE! See if the blinders weren’t there, the horse would be distracts and run off course. So Kathy RUN YOUR OWN RACE and stop focusing on the board!”
From that day forward, I decided, to run my own race. So for the rest of the year I only read my own sale reports, I did not look at the leader board and I didn’t focus on my peers. I ended my first year at the company selling over half of a million dollars in advertising and I ranked 5th for the most sales in company, out of about 100 Account Executives. I had accomplished my goals and was entered into the Presidents Club.
As moms, we are always putting our needs on the back burner. However, I want to remind you not to give up on your dreams and goals. I hope what I shared with you today helps you accomplish yours DREAMS and remember always Run Your Own Race!
