As you might’ve heard the Lego Batman movie debuts on February 10th, 2017. We were able to interview Rosario Dawson who voices Barbara Gordon at the Montage in Beverly Hills. The decor was all Lego Batman’d out. The black and yellow balloons showcased the colors of Batman’s costume, it was a sight to see. Anywho, Rosario helped us learn about how certain scenes in the film were created, how the character she voices isn’t one dimensional and about her character’s love interest with Batman. Let’s talk about all that.
Rosario voices Barbara Gordon, aka Batgirl. She mentions how her character exudes this confidence even amidst tragedy and turmoil. As you will learn in the movie it is evident that Barara Gordon has a bullet-point plan for how to help fight crime in Gotham City and through the movie she exudes that confidence in her work, in her partnership with Batman and with the citizens of the city.
Rosario stated, “…she grew up as Commissioner Gordon’s daughter who had this remarkable relationship Batman who is an incredible figure, and their two worlds having the regular police force, you’re going to need to marry that to someone like a Batman that you can trust.”
Another point Rosario mentions is about how she voices a character that isn’t one dimensional and has many facets to her, such as, how she serves the city, her job and her new found role when she takes over with her new plan. Not to mention when she becomes part of a team with her long-time inspiration, Batman. There is more to her than just stepping into a role her father once served.
She stated, “I didn’t know who my Batgirl was or my Commissioner Gordon because there have been different iterations that we played with….I remember when I saw the poster with ‘She’s So Boss’ I was like I hope so. But I watch the movie, and I’m like, “she’s so boss.”
Rosario mentioned There was even an Eartha Kitt reference who was Catwoman. “..I loved the campiness…” which is referring to the theatrical and powerful performances of Batman throughout the years. “…it was always something I was a fan of…” There was admiration for Batman and the stories told.
It is evident Rosario Dawson is a woman voice-acting a female character that is strong, self-confident, multi-faceted and able to adapt. There is more to Barbara Gordon than just becoming Batgirl. Batgirl is powerful because of who she is behind the mask. The partnership with Batman only helps her grow and evolve in the story. The Lego Batman movie is something boys, girls and people of all ages can relate to.
