Steven Speilberg’s latest work, Ready Player One, is slated to hit theaters March 29th. So what better to celebrate the release of the film besides setting up maze themed after the events in Ready Player One?
The Ready Player One Challenge is an experiential, hyper-sharable maze in the heart of Hollywood designed for all ages to escape the Real World and explore the OASIS in search of three hidden keys. This choose-your-own-adventure experience gives fans total control to enjoy and interact A/V installations, interactive displays, nostalgic gaming stations, beautifully re-created “set” environments, immersive in-world moments, live actors, authentic film props, and early access to film content, all enhanced by character audio/video and a film-inspired playlist, powered by Hot Topic.
Upon arriving at the location, I immediately noticed the towering pile of RV’s similar to those that appear in the trailers for the movie. There were snacks and refreshments for those of us that came, and from there it didn’t take us very long to get started.
My team and I signed some paperwork and received some wristbands, shortly after that, a guide told my group and I what the rules were and what we should expect while we’re inside. Our goal was to collect three keys, just like those in the film. The first encounter in the maze that I remember is a dance party with Beetlejuice, Harley Quinn, and a gigantic pink Care Bear. The quality of the maze was higher than my expectations, and it triggered that sense of adventure and wonder you would want from something like this.
The first key was glowing under a thick piece of glass, to acquire that key, we had to do something very specific to obtain it. Which meant a Ready Player One worker would give us a stamp if we solved the riddle for that key. A few of us thought we had to dance, put your ear to it, etc., but most of us couldn’t figure out to unlock it. The next key was hidden above an old tv set, and my lovely girlfriend happened to be the one who found that one entirely by accident. In that same room, there were old school Pacman arcade machines that we could play, and a light up wall with translucent pegs we can use to decorate.
Various halls were covered in mirrors or lights, and that was super fun to walk through. I remember there being a room with two gigantic Rubix cubes to solve, but most importantly, whoever was lucky enough to find all keys throughout the maze were granted the chance to enter a secret room. The secret room had trailers playing for Ready Player One, along with real set pieces on display to look at. And that seemed like a pretty awesome reward; I was impressed.
So, there you have it guys! Ready Player One rolls into theaters on March 29th; the movie is highly anticipated, so you don’t want to miss it! We will have a review up for the movie pretty soon, so keep an eye out for that. If you would like to try out the Ready Player One maze for yourself in Hollywood, click [here].
