Outdated Home Trends You Should Remove From Your Older Home

Older homes have a unique charm that’s hard to resist. Their history, artistry, and character are often unmatched by newer constructions. However, some design choices from decades past can make your home feel dated rather than timeless. Modernizing these elements can breathe new life into your space, making it feel fresh and contemporary. These are the outdated home trends you should remove from your older home.

Overuse of Wallpaper

Wallpaper has had its moments of glory, but the overuse of bold patterns and colors can overwhelm a room. Removing excessive wallpaper can instantly modernize your home. Instead, consider using paint or subtle, textured wallpaper on a single accent wall to add depth without going overboard.

Heavy Drapery and Window Treatments

Heavy drapes and elaborate window treatments can make rooms feel dark and claustrophobic. Replacing them with lighter, more modern options, like sheer curtains or sleek blinds, can brighten your space and give it a more airy feel. This small change can greatly affect how inviting and spacious your home looks.

Popcorn Ceilings

Popcorn ceilings were once popular for their ability to hide imperfections. Today, they are considered an eyesore and can even pose health risks. Before you start scraping, test your popcorn ceiling for asbestos. If it contains asbestos, hire professionals for safe removal. Once cleared, a smooth, freshly painted ceiling can make your home look more polished and up-to-date.

Carpeted Bathrooms

Another trend to leave in the past is carpet in the bathrooms. It can harbor moisture, leading to mold and mildew growth. It’s a complete hygiene issue. Swap out the carpet for more suitable flooring options like ceramic tile, vinyl, or engineered wood. These materials are more sanitary and add a touch of elegance to your bathroom.

Closed Floor Plans

Older homes often feature closed floor plans, with separate living, dining, and cooking rooms. Today’s homeowners favor open layouts that create a sense of flow and space. You don’t have to knock down every wall, but opening up key areas can make your home feel larger and more connected. Consult a professional before taking on major structural changes. This home improvement project is one you shouldn’t DIY.

Dark Wood Paneling

Dark wood paneling can make rooms feel dreary and confined. Lightening up with a fresh coat of paint can transform these spaces. If you’re up for a bigger project, consider removing the paneling entirely and replacing it with drywall. Either approach will help bring your home into the modern era.

Outdated Light Fixtures

The right lighting can make or break a room. Outdated light fixtures can detract from your home’s overall aesthetic. Replace old chandeliers and lamps with modern, energy-efficient options. Think about adding dimmable LEDs to create versatile lighting for different moods and occasions.

Removing these outdated home trends doesn’t mean stripping it of its unique character. Instead, it’s about finding a balance between preserving the charm of the past and bringing in modern conveniences and aesthetics. Adding some contemporary charm to your older home will blend the two styles.
