How To Protect Your Home in an Unsafe Neighborhood

Home security isn’t the most comfortable of topics, but it’s so important to discuss. In today’s tough home-buying market, many people are having to buy the cheapest properties they can find because of budget concerns. However, many cheaper homes are often in areas with increased crime rates, putting homeowners more at risk of theft, vandalism, and other property crimes.

Again, this isn’t an easy topic to discuss. However, it would help if you didn’t fear owning and managing your home. If you live in a relatively unsafe neighborhood, here’s how to protect your home.

Install a Security System With a Camera

A security system with video capability is both a deterrent for crime and evidence should a crime occur. Fortunately for you, the market for real-time, high-tech security systems is more affordable and versatile than ever.

You can get a system with a live video feed and alerts of potentially risky activity that you can view from your phone. If you notice anything suspicious, you can alert the authorities immediately. Essentially, you won’t need to be home to protect your property.

A Bonus for Insurance

Did you know that having a security system can fetch you better home insurance rates? It’s true, and this is helpful because homes in high-risk areas are automatically subject to higher premiums.

Burglar-Proof Your Doors and Windows

Doors and windows are the biggest entry points for burglars, but you can make it hard for them. For your doors, get solid-core models and install deadbolt locks for maximum security.

For your windows, upgrade to shatter-resistant glass and apply security films. A guide to custom home windows can make this process easier. Additionally, you can go with simple, classic window bars, which are affordable and effective.

Amp Up Your Exterior Lighting

Just like security cameras, illumination is a powerful deterrent to crime. If you enhance your yard security with LED lights, especially those that activate with motion, then you make your home’s exterior safer. Place such lights along pathways, entrances, and garages to deter unwelcome visitors.

Hide and Lock Your Valuables

Finally, be mindful of how and where you store valuable items. Keep valuable electronics, jewelry, and important documents in a safe or secure environment, and never leave them in plain sight. This includes ensuring that items left in your vehicle are out of view, such as in the glove box or trunk.

There are many risks of living in an unsafe neighborhood, and burglary is one of the main risks. Though it’s understandable to feel anxious and intimidated by the prospect of owning a home in such an area, the truth is that budgets sometimes can’t buy the security we would hope for. In that case, you can use this advice on how to protect your home in an unsafe neighborhood to recuperate peace of mind and protect your property and family. I wish you the best of luck; stay safe!
