I love baking and enjoy decorating cakes! I never really like store bought icing. So I learned how to make my own tasty icing it’s easy & saves money. I know a lot of you love baking just like me so I through I would share my recipe with you.
Ingredients:
-
1 cup solid white pre measured shortening
-
1 teaspoon Wilton flavor ( CLEAR vanilla )
-
2 tablespoons of water
-
1 lb pure cane confectioners sugar ( approximately 4 cups ). Confectioners sugar is powdered sugar
-
1 tablespoon of Wilton Meringue Powder
*This recipe makes about 4 to 5 cups of icing.
Step 1: Cream Shortening, water, and vanilla. To do this you can use a handheld mixer or kitchen aid. Once it looks creamy stop.
Step 2: Add dry ingredients ( sugar, and Meringue powder ), and mix. This is the tricky part.. If you are using a hand held mixer once you start mixing it together you will get little balls that look like popcorn, and this way does take about 10 minutes with a Kitchen Aid it’s a little less time.
Step 3: Once you start mixing the dry ingredients you need to make sure you do not over mix unless you are making a whipped icing. Whipped icing does not do well if you want to use the icing for decorations, and and thins quicker (melts) in a warm area. Make sure you scrap the sides of your bowl, and the mixer tool you are using.
To get a creamier consistency if your just using it for a topping to cover a cake add about 2 more tablespoons of water while mixing the sugar in, and mix for a few minutes longer.
To make Chocolate Buttercream Add 3/4 cup cocoa or three 1oz unsweetened squares, melted, and an additional 1 to 2 tablespoons of water to recipe. Mix until well blended.
If there are specific tips or things you would like to know let me know! 🙂 Tip: To save money on the Vanilla, and Meringue Powder look in your Sunday paper for Michaels craft stores coupons I always pick up my supplies there using the coupons.
