How To Know You’re Ready for a Promotion

Many women, particularly women of color, get stuck in roles that are too small for them. There are two reasons for this. One: the systemic oppression at the company denies them opportunities for advancement. Two: they doubt their achievements.

It’s hard to fight imposter syndrome, but you need to realize you’re capable of more. If you’re wondering if your current role might be too small for you, it probably is. Here are three ways to know if you’re ready for a promotion.

You’re Performing Above Your Job Requirements

The first and most obvious sign is if you are working above your pay grade. If you are consistently taking on extra work and not being paid for it, that is a sure sign that you are overdue for a pay raise.

It isn’t that obvious for everyone, though. Some other signs include consistently working more quickly and efficiently than your coworkers, easily finishing the tasks listed in your job requirements, and boredom.

If you find yourself longing for something else to do and tired of the same old tasks, you’re probably ready for additional responsibilities.

You’ve Got Good Ideas

Put simply: you have things you’d like to change. If you’re looking around your workplace and noticing problems with the processes or systems, that’s a start. The mark of leadership is when you begin thinking about how to solve those issues.

Presenting these changes and ideas to leadership while asking for a promotion is a great way to prove that you are qualified for the new role.

You Display Leadership Qualities

Take a moment to consider your personality traits in the workplace and in your personal life. Good leaders are humble; they accept criticism and pass off praise to others. They are also trustworthy and diligent; people know that they can take their word at face value. When they say they will do something, it gets done.

One of the most important qualities of a good leader is compassion. A great leader is empathetic and cares deeply for their employees and their well-being. Of course, there are other characteristics of effective business leaders worth mentioning, but these are some of the most important.

If you see these qualities in yourself, you may be ready for that leadership role. Knowing you’re ready for a promotion is half the battle; the other half is trusting yourself to thrive in this new role.
