How to Keep the Fun Rolling for Kids During a Road Trip

As everyone knows, embarking on a family road trip can be an exciting adventure, but let’s face it – long hours on the road can make kids restless. It’s not like a cruise, which is basically smooth sailing for children’s entertainment. Most kids who are 12 and under tend to get extremely restless and usually the younger the worse it gets. So, to turn those “Are we there yet?” moments into smiles and laughter instead of threatening to turn the car around, it’s essential to have a repertoire of entertaining activities.

Oh yes, it’s not like the old-fashioned days like in National Lampoon Vacation where kids would just stare out the window, there are so many ways to keep them entertained (and you too). So, here’s what you need to know!

Look into Interactive Games

It’s an oldie, but a goldie, so why not consider this? You could easily transform the backseat into a realm of fun with interactive games. Classics like “I Spy,” “20 Questions,” and the license plate game can keep kids engaged and promote a bit of friendly competition. Plus, these games are pretty nostalgic if you ever remembered playing them while you went on family road trips. So in general, just go ahead and encourage them to come up with their own variations and keep the energy high with laughter and excitement.

Technology Time

While too much screen time isn’t ideal, it’s not so bad if it’s during the road part of a road trip. A well-timed movie or educational app can be a lifesaver during a long journey since no one wants to be bored. Why not consider loading up on age-appropriate content and let the kids enjoy a bit of screen time when needed? But if you really want to make sure that they’re only interacting with things that you personally want them to interact with then why not consider looking into the Infotainment system that your car has?

If you don’t have one of these systems and you want one, you could either get one professionally installed or you could even look into buying a new car at Edmunds that has one- of course, you should have no then just one reason to buy a car if you decide to go this route!

Sing Together

This is one of those quintessential things you do together in the car during road trips! You have to get them to embrace this! So, why not create a playlist of your child’s favorite tunes? You can basically turn the car into a karaoke zone. So just go ahead and encourage them to sing along, dance in their seats, and even create impromptu performances. This not only adds entertainment but also helps pass the time in a lively manner! Seriously, this is going to be one of those things that they’ll look back fondly of.

Consider AudioBooks

It’s up to you if you want to play something from Audible or even YouTube, but getting their creative juices flowing with a book can really keep them calm and entertained. Choose stories that capture their imagination and keep them engrossed. This not only entertains but also promotes literacy skills and sparks their creativity. Obviously you need to make sure that they’re age-appropriate.
