On rainy days when you’re stuck inside the house, there never seems to be enough activities to keep your children busy and occupied for long enough. Sitting them in front of the television tends to make them grouchy and overly energetic when it comes to bedtime, so what can you do to keep their minds as busy as possible? Finding creative projects to keep your child engaged doesn’t have to be expensive, complicated or time consuming. You simply need to expose them to the options in front of them and allow them to immerse themselves into the fun.

Whether you’re setting up a new board game for them with a friend or you’re showing them how to do intricate origami creations, there are so many different things you can try. So, if you’re stuck for inspiration and looking for some home activities to try out soon, here are a handful of ideas for you to explore with your little ones.

Baking

Baking is truly the perfect home activity to keep your children busy and engaged. If they are old enough to read the directions and gather the ingredients by themselves, they will thrive during this type of home project. Not only will it help to keep them focus towards a specific goal, but it will also give them a huge sense of achievement once they have finished baking their cake, cookies or cupcakes in the kitchen!

Making Occasion Cards

This is a brilliant activity all round, because it means you don’t have to make a trip to the store for a birthday card for your loved ones! You can set your child a task to make their own Christmas cards, birthday cards and any other occasion cards you can think of. They will soon get stuck into their project and it will keep them focused for a period of time too. You will then have a beautiful creation to give to a friend or family member, which is truly made from the heart.

Origami

This is an activity that is bound to keep your child calm and focused as they complete each important step. Even if you don’t know anything about Origami, there are so many useful guides online to help you get started. Once your child gets used to the processes and intricacies of origami they will start to enjoy all of the different creations that can make.

Board Games

Board games are the best way to bring out the competitive side of your children. It’s also a brilliant way to keep them away from the television for a short period of time. A classic board game such as snakes and ladders or Monopoly will give them a task to focus on and a goal to achieve during a specific timeframe.

Educational Computer Games

A lot of parents try to steer their child clear from too much screen time, but you should never forget about the benefits that certain educational computer games can have on your child’s development. They can learn multiplication, spelling, languages and creative subjects through an array of online platforms. Whether it’s a special app on a tablet or a game on a mobile phone, there are so many engaging, enjoyable and educational computer games that are bound to keep your child occupied for a long period of time.

Practicing an Instrument

When your child is old enough and ready to be introduced to a musical instrument, you will soon start to see that they become dedicated to practicing and learning. Having an instrument at home is a blessing because it gives them something positive to work towards and it keeps them extremely engaged too. They will be delighted to show you their finished musical pieces and give you a performance after they are done practicing.

Depending on the age of your child, some of these activities may be more appropriate than others. It’s up to you to follow the interests of your child and expose them to activities that they will be drawn to. Whether they’re keen to get baking in the kitchen or they prefer getting stuck into crafts and creative projects, you’re bound to find something that keeps them happy, busy and engaged for a couple of hours. Take the pressure off yourself to reinvent the wheel when it comes to planning activities for your child; simple and enjoyable tasks at home are all you need. Use some of the ideas above and you will soon have a whole host of options at your fingertips!
