For Even More Productivity Boosts, Think Outside the Smartphone
It should go without saying that the smartphone is an invention that revolutionized the concept of productivity. If you don’t have one, you are not fully participating in society. So important is the smartphone that governments give them out for free to citizens who can’t afford them. The modern smartphone is much more than a productivity tool; it is a human right. As important as it is to your success, it is not a magic wand that will make all your productivity issues go away. You need more than a smartphone to be successful.
This is not to say that you shouldn’t be using the best smartphone productivity tools available. But there will always be new smartphones like the Samsung Galaxy S22. Should you buy it? That depends on how outdated your current mobile fleet happens to be. Don’t play the game of speeds and feeds. Benchmark rigging has been going on in the Android world for a very long time. No set of numbers tells the whole story. You can’t hang your hopes of increased productivity on the latest hardware and software. These things come and go, and provide little by way of predictability. Instead, find much-needed productivity outside of the smartphone box with these suggestions.
Modernize Your Office Furniture
Untold amounts of productivity are lost in an office setting through the uneven legs of a wobbly table, or the unresponsive wheels of an uncomfortable chair. No one is enthused about being on time for meetings when they have to elbow for room and fight for the one USB port. Instead, they will pretend to be on a sales call, or have a sudden bathroom emergency that will last, oh… roughly the time it takes to complete the meeting.
Upgrade to a modern conference table and it won’t take long before you get a different result. There will suddenly be enough room for a bit of distancing, more outlets for those smartphones in need of a charge, and perhaps even a conference table at standing height for those high-energy affairs. Office furniture also means tables that can be height adjusted, chairs that can fit more than one body type, and monitor stands that can place the screen at an ergonomically appropriate height. Good office furniture should not be something for the privileged few. By modernizing your office furniture, enthusiasm will increase along with productivity. With the right furniture in the conference room, everyone will want a place at the table.
Faster Charging
Nothing brings mobile productivity to a crawl like a dead battery. When mobile workers have to come into the office, their devices are always running on fumes. What they need is the ability to plug into the fastest chargers money can buy. They have smartphones and laptops that are hard on batteries. Car charging only gets them so far.
If it takes a laptop 4 hours to come to a complete charge, half the day is lost. What you need are chargers that can get you half a charge in a few minutes. The more time your workers are sitting around a charger, the less time they are out there using their devices to make you money. While new tech is not always the answer, you should be paying attention to newer laptops with significantly longer battery life. It doesn’t matter if your PC manufacturer of choice can’t keep up with the latest M-series chips from Apple. What matters is if they can keep up with your workload through a full day. That is a spec worth chasing. Leave the rest for enthusiasts who don’t have any real work to do.
Remote Work
There is no turning back. People have gotten a taste of remote work and they are not letting it go without a fight. Don’t fight. Keep it as an option. Having remote work as an option means that very few people will need to take a sick day. Without that option, a person can either come to the office and infect everyone, or they stay home and cause you to lose a day or more of their productivity. With remote work, the sniffles don’t have to mean a work stoppage. Even if they are only half as productive that day, that is better than zero productivity without the option to work from home.
The smartphone is the beginning of productivity. To enhance it, modernize your office furniture, get faster chargers, and offer remote work as an option.
