One thing I cherish most about my childhood is the bond my family, and I shared. My fondest memory of Voltron was most Saturday morning; I would awake to the to aroma of breakfast being prepared by my parents and hearing the distinct sound Voltron playing in the distance, like most homes in America during this time in history.
Netflix and DreamWorks have teamed up to bring back one of the most popular fan-favorite shows of all times. The Netflix original series DreamWorks Voltron Legendary Defender reimagines the beloved series in an all-new comedic action-packed show produced by executive producer Joaquim Dos Santos (The Legend of Korra, Avatar: The Last Airbender) and co-executive producer Lauren Montgomery (The Legend of Korra).
Five unsuspecting teenagers, transported from Earth into the middle of a sprawling intergalactic war, become pilots for five robotic lions in the battle to protect the universe from evil. Only through the true power of teamwork can they unite to form the mighty warrior known as Voltron.
I was invited to an event hosted by DreamWorks and Netflix. As part of the event, we previewed the first two episodes of Voltron Legendary Defender. I love the new series, it’s charming, the visuals are amazing, and the storyline is captivating offering something for old fans and new viewers.
After screening the show, I had an opportunity to interview, Kimberly Brooks (Princess Allura), Tyler Labine (Yellow Lion), Rhys Darby (Coran ), and Josh Keaton (Shiro, Black Lion). During the interview, the cast shared their fondest childhood memories of Voltron. Their stories were so relatable and beautiful; I wanted to share them with you.
They is definitely a nostalgic factor to Voltron for me, I remember and my four best friends playing a game where the four of us would work as a team to form Voltron and your imagination is a powerful thing when you are a kid. I literally thought I was transforming into a giant robot. So that’s my favorite memory of Voltron, being Voltron. ” ~ Tyler Labine
“There were actually three different Voltrons series. The Voltron Lion Force, Voltron Vehicle Force, and Voltron Gladiator Force; which was three robots that came together to form a six armed Voltron. This series wasn’t shown in the U.S. Well my dad teacher and one of his students knew he had a kid. So for my birthday gave me the Voltron Gladiator toys straight from Japan. So my favorite memory, is my friends being jealous because I had these toys that weren’t available in the US.” ~ Josh Keaton
“Unlike the rest of the team, I did not watch the show like they did. However, I do appreciate that time period it was simpler and you had to use your imagination. So my fondest memory of Voltron would be pretending I was Voltron with my friends at a time where there were no video games.” ~ Kimberly Brooks
I’m a bit older and from New Zealand but I do recall seeing Voltron once. I have this image in my head of these cool guys in great uniforms with these amazing helmets, flying through the sky. Because it was an anima it looked very different. So I remember things to myself wow this was different.” ~ Josh Keaton
