If you are planning a date night I highly recommend you surprising your date by suggesting to this movie. The movie is wonderful, and Gary Oldman deserves an Oscar for his role as Sir Winston Churchill’s.
The movie is based on the struggles and decisions that Sir Winston Leonard Spencer-Churchill fate (Academy Award nominee Gary Oldman), as he was bestowed the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1940 to 1945. The movie is a thrilling and inspiring true story begins at the precipice of World War II as, within days of becoming Prime Minister of Great Britain, Winston Churchill (Academy Award nominee Gary Oldman) must face one of his most turbulent and defining trials: exploring a negotiated peace treaty with Nazi Germany, or standing firm to fight for the ideals, liberty and freedom of a nation. As the unstoppable Nazi forces roll across Western Europe and the threat of invasion is imminent, and with an unprepared public, a skeptical King, and his own party plotting against him, Churchill must withstand his darkest hour, rally a nation, and attempt to change the course of world history.
I was blessed to attend the Darkest Hour screening and press junket and all I have to say it, I will be extremely disappointed if Darkest Hour doesn’t receive the OSCAR best Movie and Gary Oldman doesn’t receive the award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role for his Role as Sir Winston Leonard Spencer-Churchill. I am not the only one that agrees that he did an amazing job. During the junk his great Grandson, Randolph Churchill stated that “Mr. Oldman was not only the spitting image of his great great grandfather but that every time they saw him in his costume, he thought it was his Sir Churchill.”
What’s More, the costume design by Jacqueline Durran was fantastic! Mrs. Jacqueline Durran has won a BAFTA award for Vera Drake, she’s also received considerable attention for her work in Pride & Prejudice, for which she received an Academy Award for Best Costume Design nomination and won a Satellite Award. She also won an Academy Award for her work on Anna Karenina. So I will not be surprised if she wins the Academy Award for Best Costume Design for this film as well.
A Great Field Trip for HomeSchoolers
I am always looking for what kids can learn from the films I review. Although this is not a movie that is appropriate for young children. If you are Homeschooling a child that is in Jr High School, I highly recommend you incorporating this film into your curriculum. The Queen Mary has a new Churchill exhibit – “Their Finest Hour” – a Memorial service recognizing her troopship service, Fire Boat Salute to the Queen Mary and other celebratory activities. So you can combine the movie with a field trip to the ship if you live in the southern California area.
DARKEST HOUR is in theaters now, don’t miss it.
