With a little bit of care and attention, you’ll be able to transform your home into a beautiful and inviting space that’s ready for any occasion.
When life gets rough, and the house is a mess, it’s easiest to do the bare minimum to make life more manageable. Run a damp cloth over the countertop, place items in the wrong place just to get them out of the way, and toss dirty clothes in the laundry room with the thought of washing them another day. I’m guilty of doing these things on more than one occasion.
Sometimes, cleaning is a daunting task. I’ve struggled with my mental health during the winter season; the cold weather and lack of sunlight certainly don’t help. Though I find comfort in wrapping up in a blanket and taking time after work to decompress, it’s not easy to find the motivation for self-care, hobbies, or cleaning up the house.
When the moment strikes, and you finally rise from your challenges, take advantage of that feeling! There are features in your home you should clean with care. Come along with me to learn about these items and how cleaning isn’t as scary as you might think!
Hardwood Floors
Natural hardwood floors need more attention than laminate flooring or carpeting. While hardwood floors are durable, they also need careful attention. When sweeping, choose a broom with soft bristles arranged at an angle. Lightly brush across the surface to avoid scratching the natural grain.
When you want a deeper clean after sweeping:
- Select a microfiber mop.
- Add a hardwood cleaning solution to the mop water.
- Mop the surface moving with the wood grain to avoid disturbing the surface.
You don’t need any heavy equipment to clean your floors. Remember, excess moisture can damage the wood over time.
Marble countertops
Marble countertops are known for their modern and sleek appearance, but they’re also one of the most challenging countertop materials to care for. It requires more maintenance than most countertops because of its porous qualities, leaving it vulnerable to scratches and stains.
Don’t use disinfectant wipes on any marble countertops. Instead, use mild dish soap mixed with water and a clean, non-abrasive sponge. Lightly clean the surface until the stains are gone. Then, dry with a soft towel to avoid creating any spots or streaks. When you gently and frequently clean your marble countertops, you’ll notice the incredible difference in the quality and its prolonged beauty.
Garbage Disposal
Clean the garbage disposal once every two weeks with half a cup of baking soda, half a cup of white vinegar, and a small pot of hot (not boiling) water. Pour the baking soda into the disposal first, then the white vinegar. Let them sit for 20 to 30 minutes. Follow with hot water to flush.
Keep the blades sharp and the disposal sanitized between cleanings by freezing freshly-squeezed lemon juice into cubes, popping a few into the disposal, and letting it run. Try to implement garbage disposal cleaning in your kitchen cleaning routine so you don’t risk damaging or breaking the disposal in the future.
Wood and Glass Doors
Glass and wood front doors need a little extra attention when cleaning. During my weekly deep cleaning routine, the front door is usually the last place I think about cleaning. About once a month, I recall how important it is to clean up my gorgeous front door. After all, it is the first thing people see just before entering my house!
Lightly dust away any dirt and dust with a dry microfiber towel. Find an outdoor glass cleaner to clean any glass areas. Then, you can bring your attention back to the wooden door itself. Remove any superficial wear and tear with a light polish to revive your front door’s original sheen!
If you feel discouraged, don’t worry! Your moment and motivation will arrive one day to help you overcome obstacles and even clean these features of your home with care. Everyone deserves a home that’s polished and ready for any occasion.
