Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets is a movie a based on a best-selling graphic novel about two agents, Valerian and Laureline, who are set on a mission to vanquish an unknown threat to what the City of a Thousand Planets calls ‘paradise.’ Last night, I attended a trailer launch screening for the film, and that was a first for me. Never before had I gone inside a theater just to screen a trailer, it was a very interesting experience, to say the least.
The atmosphere, excitement, and energy were the same as if I was attending a screening. I could tell that a few of the people I was sitting next to were fans of the novel, so seeing their reaction to the trailer helped me understand the magnitude of the film itself. The trailer, through my eyes, seemed like it showed viewers what it had in store, while at the same time generate a bunch of questions. I’m hoping the film found it’s sweet spot with CGI because a significant portion of the trailer has CGI, so I’m hoping that doesn’t compromise the experience. Nonetheless, the visuals were pretty spot on.
After the trailer had rolled twice for us, this guy sitting behind my partner and I was very enthusiastic about it, in fact, much more enthusiastic about it than anyone else in attendance. So I looked back, and it was Jaden Smith! I kid you not. I thought that was so cool.
So after the trailer launch, my partner and I attended an after party at a fancy pizzeria right around the corner from Arclight, and it was very comfortable and welcoming for us. We said hello to a few people we knew, and the lovely woman who invited us, then we found some seats and waiters immediately brought us food and drinks. Shortly after we finished chowing down on artisan pizza, Kendall Jenner walks through the door, and I recognize her immediately, because what Los Angeles resident wouldn’t?
