Home maintenance can take up a lot of your free time on the weekends if you don’t have the right tips. No matter the type of home you have, staying involved with and on top of regular maintenance is important to its longevity. So, here are some easy maintenance tips for new homeowners to help you and your home stay on track.

Check All the Filters

Your home has several filters that need regular maintenance to keep everything running smoothly. Start by checking all the filters as soon as you move in and create a simple calendar to schedule their next replacement.

HVAC Filters

The most important filter you must check is the HVAC filter. Keeping these filters clean and free of dust and debris ensures your air conditioner and heater run efficiently, keeping your home comfortable throughout the year.

Additional Filters

The next filters you should inspect are the refrigerator water filters, the dryer lint filter, the range hood filter, and the faucet aerators. Always replace the aerator or filter first if you ever notice a decrease in water flow. Then, troubleshoot from there if the water pressure is still struggling.

Check and Clean the Gutters

Your home’s gutters guide water away from the roof, siding, and foundation, but clogs can happen if there is a build-up of leaves and other debris. Start off fresh by clearing your gutters as soon as you move in. Then, plan to do it at least twice each year. After that, a good schedule to keep is right after the leaves have fallen in the fall and again in the spring before the heavy rains of summer.

Regularly cleaning your gutters is an essential maintenance task that will help you avoid costly problems down the road.

Tend to the Outdoor Spaces

You’ll want to tend to the landscaping around your home for obvious reasons, such as improving your home’s curb appeal. However, this is not the only reason to inspect your outdoor spaces.

You must mow the lawn, water the plants, and trim the trees and bushes to properly maintain your yard. The chances for your foundation to collect standing water and rodents to more easily access your home through windows and cracks increases when your landscaping is overgrown.

Caulk Around Tubs, Sinks, and Windows

Check the caulk around your tubs, showers, sinks, faucets, and windows as soon as you move in. Maintaining the caulk around areas where water is present is important to keep everything sealed and in top shape. Check these seals often, at least once a year, and pay attention throughout the year, making replacements if you notice cracks, gaps, shrinking, peeling, mold, or mildew.

Maintaining your haven doesn’t have to be difficult, especially if you use these easy maintenance tips for new homeowners. From setting up a calendar to keep track of your responsibilities to doing the hard work of tending to your landscape, you will set yourself up for success in no time. With a little effort and preparation, you’ll keep everything in top shape and prevent bigger issues down the road.
