Simple Drug-Free Ways to Kiss Allergies Goodbye

I’ve been blessed to homeschool my daughter since she was TK ( Transitional Kindergarten). Normally for Earth Day, we attend a special event that one of the studios is hosting, which usually includes several educational activities. But, this year, the world is at a standstill with us all getting use to participating in social distancing. However, my husband, Justin and I still wanted to create a special memory for our daughter. So to celebrate, what, quite possibly may be the most memorable Earth Day in our collective history. Justin created a set of Earth Day Homeschool activity sheets for 1st Grade. Today’s story is brought to you by Apple TV. However, all thoughts are my own.

As part of this important moment in time daughter, kicked off our Earth Day 2020, by watching Apple TV+ new original short Here We Are Notes For Living on Planet Earth. Check out the clip, below entitled “Time is Precious”.

This new animated, family film comes to life through the voices of Academy Award and Golden Globe-winner Meryl Streep, Emmy Award-winner and BAFTA-nominee Chris O’Dowd (“Girls,” “State of the Union”), SAG Award nominee and Critics’ Choice Award-winner Jacob Tremblay (“Room,” “Wonder”) and Oscar nominee Ruth Negga (“Loving,” “Ad Astra”). In this poignant and captivating love letter to Earth from author Oliver Jeffers, based on his No. 1 New York Times Bestseller and 2017’s No. 1 TIME Best Book of the Year, a precocious 7-year-old learns about the wonders of the planet from his parents over the course of Earth Day.

After we watched the short, to review what she learned, we created the list critical thinking questions below, to go over with her.

My husband is an artist and on any given day you can find our daughter, Imonni, right next to her father asking him how to draw her favorite character. So we design the drawing activity below for her to do.

Earth Day Homeschool Activity Sheets Butterfly Craft

If you’ve been on the site you’ve notice I love crafting. However, this time I wanted something quick and easy. So Justin  created a butterfly printable and to form the body we use a toilet paper. You can do this craft with the kids or  they can do it on their own. Below are the step by step instructions for our Earth Day butterfly craft.

Materials Needed for our Earth Day butterfly craft.

  • Toilet Paper Roll
  • Print Out
  • Glue &  Clear Tape
  • Pipe Cleaners of Any Color
  • Cotton Balls
  • Black Washable Paint
  • Crayons or Markers

Print out the the butterfly printable by clicking on the link above and have your child color in the wings using crayons, color pencils or markers. (We’ve included a color copy of our butterfly printable for those of you that may want to skip this step.) Or you can build both Butterflies like we did.

Step 3

Next cut out all four wings and face making sure not cut off the black tabs and glue both sides together. (Adult Supervision Advised)

Step 4

Then take both wings and attach them to the center of the toilet paper roll using glue or clear tape. Next, attach the face to the front of the toilet paper roll by gluing or taping the black tabs to the side of the roll.

Step 5

Next make the feet of your butterfly by cutting 1 black pipe cleaner and in folding both pieces in half. Then attach of the folded pieces to the front and back of the bottom of the toilet paper roll by taping the center fold of each of the pipe cleaners to the bottom using tape.  Finally, make the Antenna by cutting a pipe cleaner in half, then fold each pieces in half and roll the each end. Then tuck the folded end of the pipe cleaner into the back side of your butterfly’s face.

If you create this project with your little one please share it on Instagram and please tag us @mrskathyking. We would love to see all of your lil master pieces.

Celebration of Earth Day with your little on by watching “Here We Are: Notes for Living on Planet Earth” on Apple TV+, a home for award-winning, educational children’s programming. Then (Click Here) to download our Earth Day Homeschool Activity Sheets butterfly craft for first grade.
