I’ll be honest, I’ve never been very big on playing Angry Birds.  I usually try my best to stay away from time-wasting flash games, and I have to admit that I rolled my eyes at the idea of a feature-length movie based on the popular smartphone game.  Nonetheless, I jumped at the chance to see an advance screening of Sony’s Angry Birds Movie at the Grove.  Even if it was out of pure curiosity, I wanted to see what the studio responsible for Spider-Man could do with a simple video game as source material.

The Angry Birds Movie follows the character Red, a flightless bird that lives on a remote island with other flightless birds.  He’s a misanthropic outsider who’s sent to a support group because of his uncontrolled anger (go figure).  But when a mysterious group of green pigs come from a distant land with shady intentions, it’s up to Red to convince the town that a little healthy skepticism can go a long way.  This movie is a pretty solid children’s flick with a standard storyline about friendship and acceptance.  Whether you loved the popular game or are looking for a movie night out with the kids, the film is packed with plenty of funny moments that the whole family to enjoy. What’s more, there are several lesson Kids can learn from the Angry Birds Movie.

Here’s 3 Lesson Kids Can Learn from The Angry Birds Movie

  1. Go With Your Gut

The world can be a tough place to live in when it comes to evaluating the sincerity of people who claim they only want what’s best for you.  In the movie, Red is the only one skeptical of the pigs’ true motives when they first arrive on the island promising friendship.  The rest of the town accuses him of being too cynical, but in the end it is his natural suspicion that exposes the sinister ulterior motives of the pigs.  It’s a good lesson for kids to learn about trust and the critical thinking required to question things as they get ready for the adult world.

  1. The Benefit of Making Friends That Understand You

The key to Red’s success in the film really comes down to the friends he makes in his anger management courses.  This band of lovable misfits sticks by his side despite his antisocial tendencies, and they show how truly important it is to have friends that love you for who you are.

  1. Teamwork!

Concerned villagers, including Red (Jason Sudeikis), Chuck (Josh Gad), Bomb (Danny McBride), Matilda (Maya Rudolph), Stella (Kate McKinnon) and Judge Peckinpah (Keegan-Michael Key) gather on the beach in Columbia Pictures and Rovio Animation's ANGRY BIRDS.

Those who are familiar with the video game can recall all the different kinds of birds that can be utilized in defeating the evil swine.  The movie uses this popular feature to make a point about the value of teamwork in achieving your goals.  Red would not be able to take on the pigs by himself, and it is the unique (and often bizarre) characteristics of all the other birds of the island that turns them into formidable opponents. Which is a big example for kids on how it doesn’t matter how dubious a set of skills might seem in the short term, there is always room for everyone’s talents in a happy community.
