The holidays are coming, and I can already feel that familiar mix of excitement and overwhelm creeping in. You know what I’m talking about—that moment when you realize your house must be guest-ready, gift-storage capable, and somehow still functional for daily life. Let me share some tried-and-true strategies on how to declutter your home before the holiday season that have saved my sanity more times than I can count.

Start With One Room at a Time

I’ve learned the hard way that trying to declutter your entire house in one weekend is a recipe for disaster. Select one room and dedicate yourself to completing it thoroughly before proceeding to the next. Start with the spaces your guests will see first, such as the entryway, living room, or kitchen. You’ll feel accomplished when you complete one area, and that momentum will carry you through the rest of your home.

Create Three Simple Piles

This method has never failed me, and I promise it will also work for you. Create three distinct piles as you go through each room: Keep, donate, and trash. Be honest with yourself about what you truly use and love. That kitchen gadget you bought three years ago but haven’t touched since January can find a new home with someone who will appreciate it.

Focus on High-Traffic Areas First

Your family and guests will spend most of their time in common areas during holiday gatherings. Clear off those surfaces that tend to collect random items throughout the year, such as kitchen counters, coffee tables, and dining room tables. These spaces must function well for cooking, eating, and socializing. Your entire home feels more welcoming and spacious when these areas are clutter-free.

Tackle the Hidden Clutter Zones

Closets, pantries, and storage areas might seem less critical since guests won’t see them. But trust me on this one, you’ll need these spaces to store holiday decorations, extra bedding for guests, and all those wonderful gifts you’ll be wrapping. Operating your business from home? Knowing how to keep your business organized during busy seasons also applies here—having designated storage spots prevents chaos from taking over. Clean out one closet thoroughly, and you’ll be amazed at how much room you actually have.

Make Eco-Friendly Choices During Your Declutter

While you’re sorting through items, consider the environmental impact of your decisions. Facts about glass recycling you should know include that you can recycle glass containers endlessly without losing quality or purity. Separate your glass items for proper recycling, and donate items that are still in good condition rather than discarding them. This approach feels good for your conscience and reduces waste during an already consumption-heavy time of year.

Set Realistic Expectations for Yourself

Remember, you don’t need a magazine-perfect home to create beautiful holiday memories. Your family and friends are coming to spend time with you, not to judge your housekeeping skills. Focus on creating clean and comfortable spaces by decluttering your home before the holiday season.

Sometimes the most meaningful celebrations happen in homes that feel lived-in and loved rather than pristine showplaces. The goal isn’t perfection, it’s creating space for what matters most during this special season. Ensure your loved ones can gather, laugh, and enjoy each other’s company in your home.
