Squirrels are fascinating creatures to watch darting through trees or nibbling on treats. If you’re looking to make your yard more inviting for these little acrobats, it’s easier than you might think. By catering to their basic needs and providing a hospitable environment, you can coexist harmoniously and simply enjoy their antics. Here are some creative ways to make your yard squirrels more comfortable.

Keep Them Hydrated With Fresh Water Sources

Squirrels, like most animals, need access to clean, fresh water year-round. Adding a shallow water source to your yard will keep them hydrated.

Birdbaths are an excellent choice, but make sure they are easy for squirrels to access by placing them on a stable surface. During colder months, consider adding a heater to keep the water from freezing. Regularly cleaning your water source ensures it remains safe for drinking.

Build Shelter With Squirrel Houses

An often-overlooked way to provide comfort for squirrels is by offering shelter. Squirrel houses offer an ideal spot for them to hide, sleep, and raise their young. Install squirrel houses in trees at a height of at least 12 feet above ground. Be sure to choose a sturdy design that mimics natural tree hollows.

For yards with limited trees, placing these houses near shrubbery works as an alternative. Taking these steps makes your yard more inviting and deters squirrels from seeking shelter in attics or homes.

Plant Vegetation Squirrels Love

Creating a yard with squirrel-friendly vegetation does wonders for drawing them in. Oaks, walnuts, and pecans provide shelter and a steady food supply. Planting berry-bearing bushes, such as raspberries or elderberries, adds vibrant color to your landscape while giving squirrels something delicious to forage. Consider focusing on native trees and plants that naturally support local wildlife, as this creates a harmonious environment for squirrels and other creatures.

Set Up Feeding Stations

Feeding stations are perhaps the easiest way to keep squirrels comfortable while reducing their opportunities to raid bird feeders. A small platform or a mounted hanging feeder filled with squirrel favorites like nuts, sunflower seeds, and corn kernels works well.

Make sure these feeding stations are high enough to keep them safe from predators. Consistently refilling feeders maintains their interest and encourages them to frequent your yard.

Addressing Common Myths and Curb Appeal

Some homeowners worry that encouraging squirrels will damage the aesthetics of their yard. Contrary to popular myths about squirrels, they rarely destroy well-maintained spaces if they have ample resources available to them.

Enhancing your yard’s design with elements like decorative shrubs and sleek feeding stations can actually boost curb appeal for new homeowners, presenting a yard that appears lively and well cared for.

Making your yard more comfortable for squirrels is about coexisting with nature in a mutually beneficial way. By implementing simple yet thoughtful adjustments, you provide them with vital resources while enriching your outdoor experience.
