We all want our kids to be as smart as they can be, right? After all, the more intelligent they are, the more opportunities they will have in life as they grow through school and college and eventually into the world of work, but how exactly do you help your child meet their intelligence potential, other than feeding them a healthy diet and ensuring they get the exercise they need?
1. Video Games
You might be forgiven for thinking that video games are one thing that are sure to dumb down your kids but you would be dead wrong if you do! Games like Minecraft and Portal, and even the old favorite that is Minesweeper, require strategic thinking, problem-solving, and creativity. They can also improve spatial awareness, and hand-eye coordination, and even boost memory. Plus, when kids play multiplayer games, they often also learn teamwork and communication skills. So, the next time your kid asks for extra screen time, don’t say no, but make sure that you choose the games that are most likely to give their brain power a bit of a boost!
2. Cooking Together
Who knew whipping up a batch of brownies could be an educational experience for your little ones and not just the route to a delicious snack? Well, I’m here to tell you that cooking with your little ones can teach them everything from math (weighing the ingredients) to science (the chemical reactions between the ingredients,) to reading (following your family recipes). It’s A great all-rounder, right? And one that will ensure you all have a fun time bonding together.
3. Puzzles
Jigsaw puzzles, Sudoku, crosswords—these brain teasers are more than just time-killers. They improve cognitive abilities, enhance problem-solving skills, and boost memory. Get a giant family puzzle and work on it together. It’s a great way to spend quality time, and the sense of accomplishment when you place that final piece is unparalleled.
4. Music Lessons
Learning an instrument isn’t just for future rock stars. It’s proven to enhance memory, improve coordination, and boost math skills. Whether it’s piano, guitar, or even the drums (sorry, neighbors), your kid will benefit greatly. And who knows? They might just become the next big thing in music.
5. Gardening
Get your hands dirty and teach your kids about the wonders of nature. Gardening is a hands-on biology lesson that covers plant life cycles, ecology, and environmental responsibility. Plus, kids learn patience and the satisfaction of seeing their hard work bloom. Bonus: You might get some fresh veggies out of the deal!
6. Board Games
From classics like Chess and Monopoly to modern favorites like Catan and Ticket to Ride, board games are fantastic for boosting critical thinking, strategy, and decision-making skills. Plus, they’re a great way to gather the family for a fun game night. Just remember to keep it friendly—no flipping the board in a fit of competitive rage!
7. Storytelling
Encourage your kids to spin their own tales. Storytelling improves language skills, stimulates imagination, and enhances memory. It can be as simple as making up bedtime stories or as elaborate as writing and performing a play. Plus, it’s a great way to see how your child’s mind works and to discover some wild and wonderful ideas.
8. Travel
You don’t need to travel far to expand your child’s horizons. Day trips to museums, historical sites, or even a different neighborhood can be eye-opening. Travel teaches geography, history, and cultural awareness. It’s a fun and interactive way to learn outside the classroom and create lasting memories together.
9. DIY Science Experiments
Who doesn’t love a good volcano eruption? Simple at-home science experiments, like building your own volcano can teach kids about chemical reactions, physics principles, and the scientific method. Plus, they’re a blast to do. Whether it’s creating a baking soda and vinegar volcano or making slime, these activities are educational and entertaining.
10. Exercise
Physical activity isn’t just good for the body; it’s great for the brain too. Exercise increases blood flow to the brain, which can improve memory and cognitive function. Encourage your kids to play sports, dance, or just run around the yard. It’s a great way to burn off energy and boost brainpower.
As you can see, there are tons of fun and engaging things you can do to help your kid boost their brainpower, do better in school, and have a brighter future, and because they’re all fun, they won’t fight you on doing them like they sometimes do with their school work!
