Staying motivated to exercise when you’re traveling can be difficult. The trick lies in knowing a few different methods of remaining active even when you can’t find a gym.
Find a Gym
It isn’t unheard of for people to travel frequently for business. If this is you, and you find yourself heading to the same places repeatedly, find a gym that offers a range of services, such as fitness classes. This will help you stay on track even when you’re on the go all the time.
Stay Active
It doesn’t matter if you’re traveling by plane, train, or car, traveling is one thing that can stop you in your tracks for extended periods of time. This isn’t good for your health at all. You can make a bit of physical activity easy (and relax both your body and your mind) by making sure that you always keep your running or walking shoes on while you travel. Whenever you can on travel days, don’t hesitate to walk while you’re stuck in an airport or at a train station – even if it’s just around the inside of the building. If you’re driving, stop at rest areas and walk for a bit. Make it your goal to get 10,000 steps each day, regardless of where you are.
And Speaking of Walking…
Whenever possible, skip the taxi, train, and bus. Walk instead. To be a traveler means to be an explorer. The thing is, if you’re trapped inside a vehicle all the time, you can’t do much exploring. Get yourself out there and you’ll be able to discover an entire world that would otherwise be a blur through the window. You’ll be surprised at what you’ll notice walking that you’d miss otherwise.
Yoga
The benefits are endless when it comes to yoga, but when it comes to being a traveler, it’ll leave you with more energy than you might think. This is even before considering that with all of that walking you’ll be doing means that you’ll be in need of a few good yoga stretches. Get your routine in during the early morning when you need to be revitalized or at night to relax you a bit so that you can sleep well.
Stairs
Climbing a set of stairs is a wonderful way to build strength and it’s also good for your heart. Also, it can be done either outside or inside. There might be stairs in the hotel you’re staying in. Maybe there are some stairs at a famous monument that’s close to where you’re staying. Set yourself an amount of time for the stairs and then go up and down them as fast as possible for that amount of time. If you want an extra bit of burn, do them suicide style. This is where you run up and down the first flight, then up and down two flights, and so on until you get to the top.
Pay Attention
Finally, pay attention to your body. If schedule changes or jet lag leave you feeling worn out, do a shorter workout than what you’d normally do. It’s alright to take it a bit easy every once in a while. Travel is known for being disruptive to things like what we eat and how we sleep. This doesn’t really make it conducive to attempting to increase your fitness level. That said, keep in mind that getting exercise regularly can help with low energy and stress, and this alone might motivate you to stay active. Traveling can do wonders for your mental health, but you need to balance it along with your physical health, and exercise is critical for that.
