I recently had an oppertunity to sit with the stars of The Finest Hours a heroic action-thriller, “The Finest Hours” is the remarkable true story of the greatest small boat rescue in Coast Guard history. Presented in Digital 3D™ and IMAX® 3D, the film will transport audiences to the heart of the action, creating a fully-immersive cinematic experience on an epic scale.
During the interview, I discovered a few fun facts that I would love to share with you below.
References
In order, to create his character, Chris Pine (utilizes several references.
As stated by Chris Pines, “I had a beautifully written script, and my task as an actor is to bring to life the character. I also had some great audio recording of Bernie and a firsthand account of the experience that he wrote. There’s a book and then just being in Chatham and feeling what it’s like to be in a small New England town.”
Stirring the boat
The storm scenes are so realistic, as I watch the film, I wondered was Chris actually stirring the boat? However, it was all just Hollywood magic. Chris Pine states, “I drove the boat out a little bit in, very calm waters. But out on the pond that they built for us in the sound stage, it was a boat on a thing called a gimbal which just moves.
Filling Their Shoes
The life of a Coast Gaurd is a very dangerous job. When asked if Chris Pine or Ben Foster would able to fill their characters shoes in real life?
Ben Foster stated, “We’re make believers. So the idea is imagining. I hope we all have it inside all of us the capacity to do the right thing when we need to, without the availability of a big plan.”
Chris Pine went on to say, “I have no idea, and I guess I’ll never know until I’m thrown into that situation. But I think we all have that gene to do good and to do right. Some of us are called to do it more often than others. I would hope I would have the fortitude and the courage like these guys have.
Family Matters
Boston license holds a special place for Ben Foster since it’s where he family is from. As stated by Ben Foster, “My aunt, Susan Zucker is in Boston and she runs the Conquer Cancer Coalition which raises money for cancer research in support of families. You can get Boston license plates there; they raise money for this thing. I mean that’s where my family is from and It’s where I was born.
Forget About It
One of the challenges of filming The Finest Hour was he cold weather conditions. I was curious to how Casey Affleck handled the weather conditions.
He states, “It was pretty cool. We started in the fall; then we went until Christmas and it gets pretty cold in Boston during that time. We were mostly outside and sometimes it was warmer outside than it was inside for whatever weird reason. But it was cold wet and you get used to it. You never really forget about it, but you know it was a nice group of guys who we were with so you get to complain all together and that’s comforting.
