I’m a huge nerd, so whenever Marvel releases a new film into the wilds of the Marvel cinematic universe, it’s like a holiday for me. This season’s holiday is called Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and getting a chance to screen it was a big deal to me because the original Guardians of the Galaxy were one of the first movies I covered. Anywho, the latest Guardians of the Galaxy delivers the great humor and dialogue we loved from the first installment while presenting major emotional invulnerability amongst our main characters.
Without further ado, here are 5 Fun Facts About Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2:
1. Director James Gunn jokingly said working with Kurt Russell and Michael Rooker was like wrestling with a playful bear, and trying to taze a badger.
Quote: “( in response to a question about what it’s like working with Kurt Russell and Michael Rooker ) He talks a lot, he’s got to discuss everything. It’s like wrestling with a playful bear on set every day. Working with Michael ( Rooker ) on the other hand was like trying to taze a badger. One is a lot more pleasant than the other.
2. Throughout the development of the film, director James Gunn and Kevin Feige had one small disagreement about the film that remains a mystery.
James Gunn added: ” You know, there’s one thing in the movie that I won’t bring up because I may be wrong and Kevin was right, and in part because I don’t want to embarrass Kevin if I’m right. But there was one thing in the movie that we disagreed on. Only one thing in the whole movie and Kevin let me have my way.”
Kevin Feige responded by saying: “Good luck guessing what it is. They ( the fans ) are going to think it’s some big arc; it’s the smallest thing.”
3. The cast of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 used a tiny Baby Groot statuette as a reference point during scenes on set.
James Gunn: ” We had a statue of little Groot, so we had a nice maquette that we had made, and you know, he was designed beforehand, and so we had him around, and there were great times and moments on set. During the scenes, we’d have this cute little statue standing around while all these guys ( the cast ) acted their butts off. Chris ( Pratt ) would look over at that little guy and go, damn it, ‘he’s gonna steal the whole movie’! You know? And I would be like, oh let’s get a host over here because I think Groot’s gonna be trying to get a bug while the scene is happening. He’s like, ‘really? Groot’s gonna be trying to get a bug while I’m crying about my father'”?
4. Sean Gunn ( brother to James Gunn, the director ) plays Kraglin and on-set Rocket Raccoon in the film.
5. Rocket Raccoon may be what ties the Guardians of the Galaxy to the rest of the cinematic universe.
When speaking about how well Sean Gunn did as Rocket, Kevin Feige shared: “Although nobody else in this cast is allowed to talk about it, Rocket has encountered other Marvel characters. I will tell you, all of the actors have had an amazing time with Sean, as he brings Rocket to life and they can start acting off of him. It’s really impressive”.
Bonus: Chris Pratt is a huge fan of Kurt Russel ( like many others ).
Chris noted: “You promise yourself you’re not gonna do the thing where you geek out, but it’s a little inauthentic if you don’t, because if you just go in there and you be like, ‘oh what is it, Kurt’? ‘Hey, nice to meet you. Chris’. And I don’t acknowledge the fact that how much I love him and what a fan I am, if you don’t get that out of the way, then it feels a little inauthentic. So I think I did that immediately, and it doesn’t take that long to tell someone that you love them, you really respect their work, and for them to go, ‘yeah thanks'”.
Guardians of the Galaxy arrives in theaters May 5th and is easily one of the most anticipated films of this Spring. The visuals, comedy, and dialogue hit the nail right on the head for me once again, so be sure to hop into your spaceships and check it out. No Sony Walkman is necessary.
Until Next Time
