Nobody likes a smelly kitchen, and eliminating those odors is a key part of cleaning your home. Getting rid of foul smells creates a pleasant atmosphere in which you can cook and eat and improves air quality in your home. Taking out the trash, cleaning surfaces, using your kitchen exhaust fan, and relying on natural air fresheners can help lessen odors in your space. Check out the information below for several simple ways to keep your kitchen smelling clean!

Regularly Take Out the Trash

Garbage bins can quickly accumulate food particles and other organic matter, leading to a buildup of bacteria that produces unpleasant odors. Moreover, regularly taking out the trash helps prevent pests such as flies, cockroaches, and rodents from entering your home in search of food scraps.

After removing the trash bag, clean your garbage bin and its surrounding area. Spray the inside of the trash container with disinfectant and let it dry before putting a new bag inside.

Pro Tip

Taking out the trash is especially important after cooking with meats—don’t leave the trimmings inside the in-house trash can. Likewise, when cooking with pungent foods such as garlic or onion, remove the garbage that night so that odors don’t build up.

Wipe Down Surfaces

Wiping down the surfaces in your kitchen is another way to keep your kitchen smelling fresh. By removing spills, crumbs, dirt, and residue left behind after preparing meals, you reduce the amount of grime and bacteria accumulating in the kitchen.

Regularly wiping down tables and counters with an all-purpose cleaner containing lemon or citrus extracts is especially effective at eliminating unpleasant odors. Additionally, strive to wipe up spills as they occur. If your kiddo spills their glass of milk, swoop in with a sponge so that you don’t have a sour odor stinking up your home.

Utilize the Kitchen Exhaust Fan

One of the top reasons homeowners need kitchen exhaust fans above their cooktops is to eliminate odors in the kitchen. The fan creates negative pressure in the kitchen by pulling air out of the space instead of pushing it in. This allows fresh outside air to enter, replacing stale indoor air.

Additionally, these fans have filters that further improve their effectiveness in removing grease particles that could cause unpleasant smells in the kitchen. An exhaust fan also reduces humidity levels, which can cause mold growth and foul odors if left unchecked. A quality ventilation system is essential for keeping your kitchen smelling fresh and preventing potential health issues that may occur due to poor air quality.

Use Natural Air Fresheners

Natural air fresheners use ingredients like baking soda, lemon, essential oils, and white vinegar, which are much better for you and the environment than chemical-based sprays or plug-ins. Baking soda absorbs odors from the air, lemon helps neutralize smells, and essential oils enhance the area with a range of fragrances, such as mint, lavender, or rosemary.

White vinegar neutralizes strong odors in the home, such as onion and garlic. Natural air fresheners don’t just mask unpleasant smells—they completely remove them from the area, meaning you won’t have to worry about them returning after a short while. With natural air fresheners and a cleaning routine, your kitchen will always smell fresh.
