4 Ways to Help Your Baby Sleep Better

When a baby doesn’t get enough sleep, it’s tough on both the baby and the parents. Fortunately, just a few changes can create the right conditions in the nursery to help your baby sleep more soundly. Use these tips to help your little one get the shut-eye he needs for healthy growth and development.

Install Blackout Curtains

A baby will have trouble sleeping if the light is too bright in her bedroom. It’s better to have a consistently dark atmosphere during nap time so your baby will be able to fall (and stay) asleep at any time of the day. Installing blackout curtains is an easy way to block out the light and give your newborn a cozier space to sleep.

It also helps to dim the lights as your baby prepares for bed. Consider adding dimmers to the nursery’s light switch or placing a small lamp in the room that you can use as you rock your baby to sleep.

Create White Noise

Consistent background noise provides a soothing sound for babies as they fall asleep. It also helps to block out other noises that might wake them up, which is especially helpful for getting your baby to sleep while others in the house are still awake. There are white noise machines for this purpose. Other sources of white noise could come from a fan or from an app on a phone or tablet.

Set the Thermostat at a Comfortable Level

Babies might not get the deep sleep they need if they’re too hot or too cold. According to the National Sleep Foundation, the best nighttime temperature for ideal sleeping conditions is between 60 and 67 degrees Fahrenheit. Call a professional HVAC company like Allstars Electric Heating & Air Conditioning to install a thermostat in your home or make sure your current thermostat is calibrated correctly. You can also ask about setting the temperature lower in specific rooms when your baby is napping during the day.

Use an Air Purifier

Every parent wants the best for their baby, but you may not have thought about the way your home’s air is affecting your child’s sleep. One of the best things you can do to help your little one’s health is to get an air purifier. By filtering out bacteria, viruses, pet dander, dust, air pollution, and other irritants, an air purifier makes your home much safer for your baby.

Studies have shown that infants exposed to air pollutants can have an increased risk for bronchitis, ear infections, and other health issues. Pollutants can also place a strain on their breathing or even impair lung development. These issues can also affect your child’s ability to sleep soundly, so consider adding an air purifier to your home if you don’t already have one.

Give your baby the gift of better sleep by using these tips. Just a few small changes can have a significant positive impact on their sleep and overall health.
