4 Ways To Extend the Life of Your HVAC System

The outdoor half of a central AC unit sits on a concrete slab beside a few shrubs, ornamental grass, and a brick wall.

Your HVAC system works tirelessly to keep your home comfortable, but it needs some care to keep running smoothly and avoid untimely breakdowns. Luckily, there are various ways to extend the life of your HVAC system so it can continue to provide reliable heating and cooling for years. Not sure where to start? The following tips highlight some of the best ways to keep your HVAC system in top shape.

Take Care of It

Nothing lasts if you refuse to take care of it, and your HVAC system is no exception. Most professionals recommend checking your air filters every one to two months and changing them if they look dirty or clogged. A clean filter improves airflow, keeps your indoor air fresh, and prevents your system from overworking. Most filters just slide right out, and swapping in a new one takes seconds.

You should also keep an eye on the outdoor HVAC unit and remove any leaves, branches, or debris that accumulate on and around it. Aim to keep at least two feet of clear space around the unit for proper airflow.

A Bonus

There are countless other reasons to maintain your HVAC system, including making your home safer. Failing to change filters or care for the appliance could result in electrical fires, gas leaks, and other hazards.

Clean Your Ducts

When was the last time you thought about your ductwork? Out of sight, out of mind, right? Unfortunately, dust, debris, and even mold can build up inside your air ducts and restrict airflow, making it harder for your HVAC system to work. To prevent this, you should have a professional clean your air ducts every three to five years; however, you may have to do so more often if someone in your home has allergies or if you live in a big household.

Don’t Do DIY Repairs

Nowadays, many of us believe we can handle nearly any home repair on our own after watching a few tutorial videos on YouTube. If you’ve ever thought this, you’re not alone, as DIY projects are one of the top things homeowners do that damage HVAC systems. The problem is, heating and air conditioning units are complex appliances with many different components that require professional knowledge and experience to repair or maintain properly.

Instead, leave repairs to licensed professionals. They have the tools, training, and knowledge to diagnose and fix issues safely and effectively. It might cost a little upfront, but it’s a small price to pay to avoid expensive mistakes and protect your HVAC investment.

Address Issues Immediately

Ignoring minor problems in your HVAC system can quickly turn into big, costly headaches, but addressing them immediately helps extend the life of your HVAC system. Contact a professional if you notice an abnormal noise, weak airflow, or uneven heating and cooling, so they can inspect the system and make all needed repairs.

By scheduling annual maintenance, cleaning your ducts every few years, skipping DIY fixes, and addressing issues as they arise, you can protect your system’s longevity and performance. These simple steps go a long way in reducing repair costs and keeping your home safe and comfortable for years to come.
