Hi there! As a mom, I know how important it is to make sure our kids spend time outside. With so many screens and devices vying for their attention, it can be a challenge to get them to step away and enjoy some fresh air. That’s why I’ve put together a list of four great outdoor activities for kids to enjoy.
Making time to play outside is extremely important for kids today, even more so than it was for generations past. With the prevalence of technology and screens of all different sizes, many children spend far more time inside than outside. If your kiddo just isn’t sure what to do outside, giving them an activity can help. Here are four great activities for kids to do outside.
Scavenger Hunt
A scavenger hunt can be a great activity, especially if you have flowers or trees in your backyard. Start by giving your kiddo a list of items to find. Different types of bugs, colors of flowers, and shapes of leaves can be perfect items to search for. My kids always have a blast with this one, and I love the moment of quiet while they’re running around in the yard.
Running Through the Sprinklers
This one is a perfect activity for a hot summer day. We don’t have a pool, so instead, I’ll turn on the sprinklers and let the kids run wild. For extra fun, break out water guns and water balloons!
They will almost certainly get covered in mud and bits of grass, so have the hose handy to spray them down before letting them back inside.
Sidewalk Chalk
Sidewalk chalk is a classic kid’s activity for a reason. Get your kiddos a pack of colors and let their imaginations run wild as they draw on the sidewalks and driveway. However, your kids won’t be in the safety of the backyard for this activity. I strongly recommend sitting on the front porch and keeping an eye on them; it’s one of the best ways to keep your kids safe when playing outdoors.
A Picnic
Something about the novelty of eating outdoors is so fun, even for adults. When my kids are feeling antsy, I pack some food and send them out to the backyard for lunchtime. The only other thing they need is a picnic blanket!
Encourage your kids to try out these great outdoor activities—they might just find their new favorite thing! Have a little one who doesn’t want to step away from the screen? Check out these tips on how to encourage your child to play outdoors.
