Learning how to calm down at a young age is a life skill that we can use throughout our lives. As parents, we want to teach our children how to manage their emotions and deal with stress in a healthy way. Ideal coping methods can differ for everyone depending on their individual preferences and needs, but we’ve detailed several calming activities to try with your kids to help you get started.

Spend Time Outside

Spending time outside offers numerous benefits for mental and physical health. Exposure to natural light regulates sleep patterns, while fresh air can improve respiratory function.

Likewise, being in nature engages multiple senses, such as touch, sight, hearing, and smell. By engaging these senses, children can better connect with the world around them and pay less attention to anxious thoughts. Try different outdoor activities such as walking or gardening.

Pro Tip

In addition to helping with decompression, doing outdoor activities such as gardening is also one of the best ways to boost your child’s brain. Spending time in nature allows your kids to explore ecology and environmental science.

Practice Deep Breathing

Deep breathing exercises are another excellent calming activity to try with your kids. During deep breathing, you consciously use your diaphragm to take larger breaths.

During breathing exercises, you and your child should take a slow, deep breath in through your nose, allowing your abdomen to expand. Hold the breath for three to five seconds, then exhale slowly through your mouth—exhales should be longer than inhales. Repeat this process until your child calms down.

To help your child learn to take a deep breath, have them imagine blowing up a balloon in their belly. You can also have them imagine smelling a tasty treat during inhalation and blowing out their birthday cake with each exhale.

Take a Hot Bath

Taking a hot bath or shower can offer several benefits for stress relief. The warm water can soothe tense muscles and promote relaxation. Additionally, being in a quiet and private space can give your child time to reflect on their feelings and thoughts without interruptions.

You can also enhance the experience by adding calming essential oils, such as lavender or chamomile, to the bathwater, playing soft music, or dimming the lights. Encourage your child to take deep breaths while they soak in the tub. After their bath, they can cozy up in a soft robe or blanket as they lay in bed.

Pro Tip

Aside from helping your child prioritize self-care, bathrobes are a perfect gift for kids because they’re long-lasting.

Write in a Journal

Journaling is a powerful tool for self-reflection and emotional health. Buy a diary for your child to privately express their thoughts and feelings. Encourage your child to write in their journal daily to help them develop healthy coping mechanisms for managing stress and communicating their feelings.

Engaging in calming activities with your child can help them develop essential skills for managing stress and emotions. You’ll find the ideal coping strategies for your kids by experimenting with various options.
