Focus Film’s riveting new movie, “The ZooKeeper’s Wife”, is truly the best film I’ve seen in 2017. However, I must say before going further, this film is more appropriate for tweens and up.
The ZooKeeper’s Wife is based on the real-life story of one working wife and mother who became a hero to hundreds during World War II. In 1939 Poland, Antonina Żabińska (portrayed by two-time Academy Award nominee Jessica Chastain) and her husband, Dr. Jan Żabiński (Johan Heldenbergh of “The Broken Circle Breakdown”), have the Warsaw Zoo flourishing under his stewardship and her care. When their country is invaded by the Germans, Jan and Antonina are stunned – and forced to report to the Reich’s newly appointed chief zoologist, Lutz Heck (Daniel Brühl of “Captain America: Civil War”). To fight back on their own terms, Antonina and Jan covertly begin working with the Resistance – and put into action plans to save lives out of what has become the Warsaw Ghetto, with Antonina putting herself and even her children at great risk.
I attended this screening with my husband, Matt. However, I wished I would have taken both son’s to see this film instead. Although both of them attended private school, and where AP History classes in high school. I personally feel they must see this movie to gain a better understanding of this period.
Here is few powerful life lesson we can all learn from The ZooKeeper’s Wife:
1 – It provides a precise depiction of what the Jews encountered when Germany invaded Poland and was systematically broke down, emotionally and physically.
2 – Antonina Żabińska decided to take a stance by peacefully fighting back proving you can be brave and overcome any battle without violence.
3 – What sacrifices would you make to help a friend, loved one or stranger? In “Zoo Keepers Wife” Antonina Żabińska family life is spared because of the friendship she develops with Reich’s newly appointed chief zoologist, Lutz Heck.
The Zoo Keeper’s Wife is a powerful movie and must see film, for 2017.
