The classic tale brought to life on screen, Ferdinand, follows the story of a gentle bull who doesn’t want to be mean and ruthless like his counterparts. Throughout the film we see Ferdinand convince fellow bulls alike that they are free to pursue whatever aspirations in life, rather than be set on performing against a matador. Voiced by John Cena, Ferdinand is a fantastic film for kids and would, of course, make a fun night out with the family. Furthermore, the animation is soft, and fits into the higher tear of quality, I was a fan of it. Ferdinand is filled to the brim with lessons for all of us to learn, especially young ones.
In addition to seeing the film, I had an opportunity to interview a few of the stars from the movie where they share what they hope kids take away from seeing this film.
Allow me to share with you, 3 Life Lessons Kid Will Learn From Ferdinand:
1. Don’t Let Anyone Shape Who You Are: In a world that’s heavily influenced by pop culture and riddled with bullies, this lesson is one that I thought would be great to include in this post. In the film, Ferdinand urges every one of his friends to rebel against their captors to live free and do whatever they want without suffering any consequence or live in any fear. This is a reminder that we control our own lives, and we do have a right to defend ourselves, along with our own fates.
“You are enough and to be yourself always yourself is exactly what you need to be it will take you far I like to be yourself” ~ Gina Rodriguez
2. What Matters Is On The Inside: Upon first glance, Ferdinand could look like a ferocious bull, and most bulls are known for being rough, relentless, etc. However, Ferdinand isn’t like your ordinary bull. He doesn’t love to fight, he loves flowers, and he isn’t as aggressive as some might assume upon first glance. In fact, through the duration of the film, Ferdinand isn’t the only character who shows his true colors other than what people may think of him. This lesson is great for kids as it teaches them early on that you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover.
“There are so many things kids and families can take away from seeing the third film… from Ferdinand perspective don’t be afraid to be yourself, what you see isn’t necessarily what you get all the time it more than just first impressions… There is so many great characters throughout the whole movie. The group of bulls learning that it’s ok to have friends that are different and that you don’t have to have the same goals. There are so many great lessons to be learned everyone can take something different away…” ~ John Cena
3. People Can Change: For better or worse, people can change their ways. As the film progresses, we see some of our main characters change for the better, including a fellow bull who had previously bullied Ferdinand throughout most of the movie. At first, Ferdinand and Valiente ( his bully ) don’t get along at all, but that didn’t stop Ferdinand from being kind to him and try and build a friendship with Valiente. Ultimately, Valiente changes his ways and lightens up to Ferdinand and the two become friends. This lesson is great for all of us to learn as we all have dealt with bullies at school or in the workplace. In the same sense, it’s unfortunate that good people can turn sour as well, but that isn’t showcased in Ferdinand.
At the end of the film, I highly recommend you sitting back during the credits to listing to Golden Globe nomination song “home” co-written by Nick Jonas.
“I think there is a responsibility we all have too bring some positivity and light into the world if we can or at least that that way that I see it. Being present with the oppertunity to write this song particularly only for a film is a dream come true… The song means so much to me. It’s about my family and home being the place you feel like you can be yourself and you can be who you want to be. Obvious this story was a huge Inspirations the writing process.” ~ Nick Jonas
