Last month, I had an amazing opportunity to be among a small group of bloggers to attend Disney’s “FROZEN” early press day, at the Walt Disney Animation Studios in Burbank, California. I met the Directors of “Frozen”, Disney veteran Chris Buck (Director of “Tarzan”) and first-time director Jennifer Lee (co-writer, “Wreck-It Ralph”). I learned how much research was involved in the design of landscape and characters clothing. I joined the Character TD (Technical Director) team, in their computer lab, and had a chance to try out the actual tools used to create the adorable snowman “Olaf”. I received a first hand look at how Disney’s Technology team created the most advanced-looking snow through new software and groundbreaking design. I even met the talented Animation team and watched as they demonstrated how they brought the characters of “Frozen” to life.
I grew up on Disney Films and I never imagined how much work it took to make the magic and fantasy come alive on the screen. The experience was truly a blessing. There is so much involved in creating a Walt Disney Animation, that I wanted to share with you the top 3 things that surprised me most about making of this film.
1) Special Effects at its’ Best!
One of the biggest Effects of the film is the snow. It’s an intricate part of how the main Character “Elsa” interacts with the others and expresses her emotions in the Film. There is a scene where Elsa inadvertently makes a fountain freeze. In order to create, the magical effect of frost wrapping around the fountain’s edge, and across the shape of the water, the FX team used a combination of Computer-generated imagery (CGI) and hand-drawn artwork.
2) The Perfect Hairdo!
The Character TD (Technical Director) team for Disney “Frozen” developed a new piece of software called “Tonic” in order to create complex Scandinavian hairstyles. Elsa’s hair consists of 420,000 hairs, the average human has about 100,000 hairs on their head. Disney’s most recent character Rapunzel only had 27,000 hairs.
3) Location Location!
Most Disney castles sit up on a hill, and they look down into a valley. However, the castle in Frozen is surrounded by a fjord, which is a long, narrow inlet with steep cliffs, created by glacial erosion. Placing a kingdom in this kind of environment has never been done before in a Disney Film.
